Three popular outdoor equipment manufacturers at once, namely the brands MSR, Katadyn and LifeStraw, announced the release of new gravity-type filtration systems for the spring of 2019 — MSR AutoFlow XL Gravity Filter 10L, Katadyn Gravity BeFree 3L and LifeStraw Flex Gravity 4L, respectively. The first model is an enlarged version of last year’s MSR AutoFlow Gravity Filter system, the second model is based on the Katadyn BeFree System filter range, and the third model is based on the LifeStraw Mission and LifeStraw Flex filters..

All three systems are based on membrane filtration technology, or the so-called reverse osmosis. The perforation size of the filter tubes usually does not exceed 0.1-0.2 microns, which allows you to effectively and quickly purify water from 99.9999% of all known bacteria, 99.9% of parasites and other pathogens. The filtration cartridge should be approximately enough for 1000-2000 liters, this amount may decrease or increase depending on the level of contamination of the water used.

A key advantage of gravity filters over lighter, more compact systems is their ease of use. It is enough just to collect a tank of dirty water, hang it to a sufficient height, connect a filter with a pipe and substitute the necessary «clean» container, and gravity will do the rest. The average cleaning speed is 1.5-2 liters per minute.

The MSR AutoFlow XL Gravity Filter 10L and LifeStraw Flex Gravity 4L filtration systems will go on sale in 2019, with a suggested retail price of $100 and $55, respectively. The Katadyn Gravity BeFree 3L model will appear later this year, the recommended price is no more than 70 US dollars.
