FSM (Field Sleeping Mat) and ASP (Ambush Seating Pad) pads became the first examples of bivouac equipment from the Ukrainian brand P1G-Tac this year. Today, a mat and seat is an integral part of almost any person who spends a long time outdoors away from city streets.regardless of occupation or hobbies.
I happened to use various seat pads and mats (isomat), both of my own production and from various manufacturers, including Therm-a-Rest products, the very popular products of the Izhevsk Plastics Plant, as well as the no less popular Bodenplane Molan-Bremen folding mats (Bundeswehr rug ). Bodenplane Molan-Bremen has been used most often lately, it suits me almost everyone. The mat is light weight, flat texture and takes up little space inside the backpack, I usually wear two mats at the same time. The second is used as a fallback if someone forgets theirs, like a small table, seat, or as an extra insulating layer, connecting two rugs together. The disadvantage of this rug can be considered the insufficient strength of the top coating, which can be pierced by branches, stones, and also easily melted. Another disadvantage of the Bodenplane Molan-Bremen is its thickness, only 4-5 mm.
New karemat P1G-Tac Field Sleeping Mat Manufactured using two types of materials, apart from nylon straps for fixation, they are 600 denier Cordura nylon material and insulating foam. Cordura plays the role of a protective outer layer that protects the foam inserts from external mechanical damage and thereby extends their service life. In addition, the insulating inserts are interconnected only by a layer of Cordura, which in turn ensures that the foam does not break from frequent kinks, as happens with the same Therm-A-Rest Z-Lite and Bodenplane Molan-Bremen. Of course, extra strength and durability come at the cost of extra weight and a higher price.
The FSM karemat quickly and easily folds like an accordion, which makes it more convenient when unfolding / folding and more compact when transporting, when compared with a conventional foldable Izhevsk rug 16 mm thick. In addition, this method of folding allows you to conveniently adjust the length of the rug, as well as use it as a seat. When unfolded, the rug reaches almost 192 cm in length and 61 cm in width, the thickness of the rug is no more than 15 mm. When folded, the rug is 23.5 cm long, 61 cm wide and 8.5 cm high. The mat is complemented by two adjustable nylon straps with plastic YKK buckles, these straps allow you to quickly fasten the assembled mat, create additional attachment points for hitching with a backpack.
The advantages of the P1G-Tac Field Sleeping Mat include a comfortable, versatile and durable design, as well as a good supply of length and width. Of the minuses, only its total weight can be distinguished, which approximately reaches 900 grams.
Field seats quickly gained popularity as they allowed you to sit safely even on cold and wet ground, and at the same time they had significantly less weight and took up less space than the same camping chairs. Almost all seats are made of soft insulating foams, they differ in size, weight and method of fastening. To date, the most popular method of fixation is an elastic attachment strap placed in the center of the foam, which is adjustable and fastened with a plastic buckle.
in the seat P1G-Tac Ambush Seating Pad the developers embodied new ideas in the design and in the methods of fastening, analogues of which I have not seen before. Just like the FSM pad, the ASP pad is made using 600D Cordura and two sheets of insulating foam up to 15 mm thick. Here, the foam is used more rigid, which, according to the developers, continues to retain its shape with prolonged use. The seat is equipped with two fixing straps and an adjustable belt, all elements are completely removed.
Ambush Seating Pad folds in half and is fixed with two metal buttons, when folded, its thickness reaches 3 cm, length 38 cm and width 28 cm. are not susceptible to corrosion. When unfolded, the seat can be used as a small and light rug, its length increases to 76 cm.
The seat is fixed in several ways, it can be worn horizontally or vertically, fastened with two straps, which in turn can be attached to the unloading belt, to any PALS-slings, to the belt, belt trainers, as well as to the removable nylon belt that comes with the kit. In addition, the seat can be fixed with only one belt, passing it in the middle between the layers of foam, or completely wrapping it. Of course, such a fastening is not reliable, the seat must be controlled so that it does not «slide». When mounted vertically with two straps, the seat must be mounted as high as possible, thereby reducing its vibrations and «pop» hits on the legs while walking. Regardless of the position, when trying to sit on the ASP, you have to hold and guide it with your free hand.
In the next version of ASP, I would like to see an elastic strap in the kit, instead of the usual nylon one, which is firmly fixed and does not stretch when moving. Plus, perhaps, one or two small nylon straps should be sewn in the center of the seat, through which this belt can then be stretched, thereby adding the possibility of using the seat in a classic way.
Both items of equipment are made of sufficient quality, in some places there are not quite even seams, which, of course, do not affect functionality. The P1G-Tac FSM (Field Sleeping Mat) pad and the P1G-Tac ASP (Ambush Seating Pad) seat are offered by the manufacturer in various colors, depending on the choice of color, the cost can range from $47-52 for a mat and from $17 to $18 for a seat. Today these goods can be purchased at %14 in honor of the New Year promotion from PROF1 Group.
