Purpose
The vast majority of helmets are cycling. Rollerblading helmets come in two varieties:
- freeskate helmets — used for normal driving (fitness, speed skating). Similar to cross-country helmets, but they have a less pronounced back of the head;
- kettlebells — designed for jumping tricks. Similar to bicycle kettles.

Kind
Cross—country (MTB helmet) — universal option (suitable for cross-country, tourism, various competitions, recreational riding). The perfect balance between comfort, protection and lightness. Often equipped with a removable visor that protects the eyes from the sun, rain and hitting branches.
Road helmet — looks like a helmet for cross-country, but the visor is missing. Lightweight and well ventilated. Not designed for heavy loads and does not protect against dirt.
bowler hat — designed for BMX, dirt jumping, street, trial and other «urban» styles of extreme riding. It has a semicircular shape. Sufficiently strong and light helmet, but has a minimum number of ventilation holes.
Full—face — used for downhill, freeride, aggressive street, dirt jumping, trail. Provides maximum face and head protection. Reminiscent of a helmet for motocross and is distinguished by a powerful «jaw» (protects the chin) and the presence of a large visor that protects against dirt and branches. It is heavy and there is no ventilation. The most expensive helmet
Aerodynamic helmet — designed for racing. Differs in elongated shape, lack of ventilation, high weight. These helmets are uncomfortable, but they reduce aerodynamic drag.

Model
Adult (male) — The standard version of the helmet.
Child/teenager — used by children (from 5 to 10 years old) and adolescents (from 10 to 15 years old). In appearance and construction, a small or medium MTB or road helmet, decorated with patterns and painted in bright colors. There are also ventilation holes.
Unisex — Designed for both men and women.
Female — differs from the male in the presence of a hole for long hair (braids or tails), jewelry (flowers, etc.). It is usually painted in pastel or bright colors.
Shell, frame and lining
The outer shell of the helmet is made of ABS plastic or polycarbonate. The first material is cheaper and less durable, used for cross-country, children’s/teenagers’ helmets, the second is more expensive, but its strength is much higher, full-face bowlers are made from it.
The frame of the helmet is made from expanded polystyrene. It absorbs shock and prevents head injury.
The helmet’s lining and liner fabric provide head comfort and sweat wicking. Over time, they acquire an unpleasant odor, so they must be removable so that they can be washed.
Construction
Visor — protects from the sun, dirt, branches, rain, but worsens the visibility of the road, makes the helmet heavier and vibrates in the wind.
Ventilation — provided with special holes that create air currents around the head. The number of holes (up to 20), their location (front, top and back) and shape determine the cooling of the head and the price of the helmet.
Adjustable size — a system for adjusting the size of the helmet to the size of the athlete’s head. It is carried out using a belt on the back of the head or Velcro fasteners. The most reliable and comfortable helmets have straps skipped over the top.
Important: In order to choose the right helmet for your head size, you need to measure the circumference of your head using a centimeter. The tape is located just above the ears and at the same level in front and behind.
The weight
The weight of a helmet is important for both professional riders and those who use the bike frequently or cover long distances. The lighter the helmet, the more comfortable it is. The price of a lightweight yet durable helmet is higher.
Manufacturer
Top quality products: Alpina, BBB, Cannondale, Carrera, Met, Scott, Tempish, Cratoni, Fila, Fox, Limar, Specialized, Uvex brands. Most of the manufacturers are specialized brands of cycling products, sponsors of most competitions and world champions in cycling. The main purpose of a helmet is safety. Each model of a well-known brand must be certified according to various safety standards. The main condition for choosing a helmet is comfort. Most models have an anatomically «competent» design, good ventilation, as well as an attractive and stylish design (for example, the Abus brand).
If you need to buy a helmet cheaper, then you should pay attention to the products of Explore, Longus, Profi Trike, Amigo — these are Russian or Chinese brands. Finding and choosing a comfortable helmet among them is quite realistic, but be sure to pay attention to small details: fasteners, straps, fasteners — they tend to fail quickly and forever.
Children’s helmets make up a special category: brands Bellelli, Kiddimoto and others. Here the most important role is played by an attractive design: it is he who is able to attract the child and accustom him to the «correct» and safe equipment. However, it is worth noting that good brands nevertheless also meet all safety requirements according to world standards.
