Kind

boots — sports shoes for playing football on the open field. A characteristic feature is rather high spikes on the sole.

Futsal shoes (bumps) — sports shoes for playing mini-football (futsal) in the gym with a wooden floor. Unlike boots, futsal shoes have a smooth sole without spikes so as not to damage the floor. It is not recommended to play futsal shoes on turf, as there is a high chance of injury due to poor grip.

Centipedes (multi-studded shoes) — an intermediate option between boots and futsal shoes. These shoes are equipped with short rubber spikes, the length of which does not exceed 5 mm. Centipedes are suitable for playing football on an open field with any surface, including artificial and trampled ground. Sometimes it is appropriate to use such shoes in a hall with a wooden floor.

Age group

There are football shoes for adults and children. Children’s models differ in the smaller size and bright design. Most often, such shoes are represented by centipedes, which reduce the load on the child’s feet and thereby prevent diseases of the joints and muscles. Children’s and teenage boots are marked «JR» (Junior).

Sole marking and purpose

AG (Artificial Grass / Ground) — for playing on synthetic turf. This football shoe has 15-27 short studs. The length of the spikes does not exceed 10 mm. The spikes are made of rubber or polyurethane.

MG (Multi Ground) — for playing on different fields. These boots have 13-24 spikes. The length of the spikes ranges from 8-12 mm. Spikes are made of rubber, plastic or polyurethane. These boots are often bought by children who study in football schools.

FG (Firm Ground) — for playing on natural or synthetic grass. These boots are equipped with 9-14 studs. The spines are 12-15 mm long. Spikes are made of polyurethane or plastic. The most versatile boots. The best choice for children.

HG (Hard Ground) — for playing on hard natural or synthetic grass. In terms of characteristics, such shoes are close to analogues marked “FG”, but are equipped with a large number of spikes (16-21), while the spikes themselves are slightly shorter.

SG (Soft Ground) — for playing on soft natural grass. Also suitable for wet weather. These boots are equipped with 6-8 elongated spikes. The length of the spikes reaches 12-18 mm. The spikes are made of metal. Such shoes are contraindicated for children, as they can cause flat feet.

TF (Turf), PT, AST — this is how the soles of centipedes are marked.

ID (Indoor), IN, IC (Incourt) — this is how the soles of futsal shoes are marked.

Important: The choice of football shoes largely depends on the hardness of the surface. The harder the field, the lower the height of the spikes and the greater their number. Properly selected shoes provide reliable grip on the playing field and evenly distribute the load on the foot.

Spike type

There are the following types of spikes:

  • conical — provide the athlete with stability when playing on hard natural surfaces;
  • flat (fin, blade) — guarantee high speed when running on the ground;
  • boomerangs — give the player a quick acceleration;
  • hexagons — guarantee reliable grip with a hard playing surface and increase the accuracy of hitting the ball;
  • round — designed for artificial lawns.

The disadvantage of many boots is the rapid wear of the studs and the inability to replace them. In expensive versions marked “SG”, the spikes are made removable, and spikes of different lengths are included in the package. This makes it possible to adapt the shoe to the characteristics of a particular playing field, as well as extend its life by replacing the spikes as they wear out. Such models are chosen by professional athletes.

Material

Top

Leather — high-quality material with good strength, elasticity and breathability. As a result, the feet are sweat-free and comfortable, and the shoe itself provides great ball feel for the best control.

In the manufacture of football shoes, kangaroo and calf leather are usually used: the first is more expensive and softer, the second is stronger, but wears out longer. Kangaroo leather models are used in competitions, while calfskin boots are optimal for training.

At the same time, genuine leather football shoes are expensive, wear out relatively quickly, and are not suitable for playing in wet weather conditions. Such models are chosen by athletes with a wide foot.

Faux leather — devoid of the disadvantages of genuine leather and less prone to deformation. But faux leather is tougher, wears out faster and is less breathable. This material is often used in the production of budget football shoes.

Polyurethane / Polyvinyl chloride (PVC, PVC) — artificial materials that are characterized by relatively low cost, low weight, resistance to low temperatures and wear. Shoes made of polyurethane are not prone to getting wet, but also do not let air through, therefore, the feet will sweat. Compared to leather, such materials are less elastic.

Suede — similar in properties to leather, but less prone to deformation and provides better contact with the ball. But suede quickly loses its original appearance and is sensitive to moisture. Separate models of futsal shoes are made from such material.

There are also football shoes made of innovative polyester-based knit materials (Flyknit, Primeknit). Lightweight and breathable boots are obtained from such materials, which fix the athlete’s legs well, but at the same time do not rub. This shoe enhances tactile sensations when in contact with the ball.

Sole

Rubber — a relatively cheap material that absorbs shock loads remarkably during the game. Cons: Rapid wear, unsuitable for use in the gym (leaves black marks).

Polyurethane — Differs in elasticity and small weight. As a result, this sole provides optimal mobility of the foot and protects it from stress.

Sometimes there are boots with a TPU sole. This material has the properties of polyurethane and gives excellent grip on the playing surface at high speed.

Size

Properly sized football shoes fit snugly around the foot, but do not squeeze. There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing boots and other shoes by size.

Manufacturers usually provide information using three dimensional grids: USA (US), Great Britain (UK), European Union (EU). The closest to the Ukrainian size is the European grid, which differs by 1-1.5 values up (adult models). In children’s football shoes, this difference varies depending on the manufacturer.

The material also influences the correct choice of football shoes in size. Products made of elastic calfskin or kangaroo leather are purchased strictly by size. In the latter case, you can even take a little tight boots. Shoes made of artificial leather or polyurethane are chosen half a size larger, as these materials do not stretch during wear. This is important as the size of the foot increases during the game.

Do not buy children’s football shoes «for growth»: boots that are too big will not only cause discomfort during the game and reduce game performance, but also lead to injury.

Children’s models are selected like adults: exactly in size or half a size larger (for synthetic shoes). Since children’s feet grow quickly, it makes no sense to choose expensive kangaroo leather boots. It is better to take cheaper options from artificial materials or calfskin.

Important: To determine your own foot size, you should move a blank sheet of paper against the wall, and then stand on it so that the heel rests against the wall. After that, it is necessary to mark on the sheet the point farthest from the wall — the big toe. Measure the distance between the heel and the toe and compare the result with the values in the manufacturer’s size grid.

Fixation

Lacing — securely and rigidly fixes the foot in boots, centipedes, futsal shoes. Minus — to properly lace up shoes, you need certain skills. Presented in two varieties:

  • straight — gives a secure fixation of the foot;
  • asymmetric — provides better ball control.

Velcro — easier to use, but gives a less secure fixation. Typical for children’s football shoes.

Execution

Stitched — are characterized by increased resistance to wear and enhance tactile sensations when in contact with the ball in the game.

Waterproof — designed for playing in wet weather conditions. The waterproofness of the boots is determined by the tightness and quality of the seams, as well as the presence of a special impregnation of the top, which does not allow the shoe to absorb moisture.

With protective lacing tongue — this detail prevents accidental untying or loosening of the lacing during the game.

With one-piece tongue – such a detail gives excellent maneuverability on hard surfaces and securely fixes the foot.
